Royalty Pharma Pledges $7.5 Million to Accelerate Blood Cancer Research

Royalty Pharma is anchoring a new funding model for Blood Cancer United with a $7.5 million donation, providing the non-profit with a significant capital infusion for its Therapy Acceleration Program. The initiative bridges the gap between early-stage laboratory discovery and clinical application for high-potential cancer treatments.

The capital will be deployed through the Therapy Acceleration Program (TAP), a venture philanthropy arm that utilizes strategic equity investments to support biotech firms. Unlike traditional grants, TAP operates on a cycle where financial returns from successful drug developments are reinvested into future research, effectively creating a self-sustaining pipeline for new therapies. Royalty Pharma stands as the first major corporate donor under this revamped structure, which aims to address the critical funding chasm often encountered by small-cap biotech companies.

Since its inception in 2007, TAP has supported the development of therapies that have secured FDA approval, including the menin inhibitor ziftomenib for acute myeloid leukemia. Dr. E. Anders Kolb, president and CEO of Blood Cancer United, noted that the infusion of resources arrives at a pivotal developmental stage for many emerging drugs, where professional guidance and capital often dictate whether a treatment progresses or stalls. The donation builds upon a longstanding relationship between the two entities, which previously collaborated on a five-year initiative to bridge healthcare disparities in oncology treatment.
