A 17.4% vacancy rate among MRI technologists has triggered a strategic alliance between DeVry University and the Pulse Radiology Institute. The new hybrid associate degree program aims to bypass the industry’s chronic bottleneck—clinical placement—by securing training sites for students before their education begins, rather than leaving them to search independently.
The partnership integrates DeVry’s established academic infrastructure with Pulse Radiology’s clinical training network. Under the model, students complete online coursework during the initial phases before transitioning to hands-on clinical rotations by their third semester. This structure addresses the primary constraint in the current pipeline: the limited capacity of imaging facilities to host trainees.
Jason Horne, chief strategy and transformation officer at DeVry, noted that the program is designed to align student skills with specific employer demands in a field where job growth is projected to outpace the national average for all occupations by nearly three times through 2035. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay for these professionals stands at $95,480.
Edcetera CEO Nader Qaimari described the initiative as a targeted effort to bridge the workforce gap in licensed healthcare roles. Pulse Radiology brings a strong track record to the collaboration, reporting a 95% registry exam pass rate and a 92% retention rate as of mid-2025. While the program is currently moving toward regulatory and certification approvals, it represents a significant shift in how educational institutions are attempting to solve the medical imaging shortage.
