Alfonso Camilo Barco Muñoz Named Acting CEO of Ecopetrol

The Board of Directors at Colombia’s state-controlled oil giant Ecopetrol has appointed Alfonso Camilo Barco Muñoz as acting chief executive officer. The transition, effective September 15, 2026, follows the retirement of Juan Carlos Hurtado Parra, who concludes his tenure after serving as both executive vice president and acting CEO.

Barco Muñoz transitions into the leadership role while maintaining his current responsibilities as Corporate Vice President of Finance and Sustainable Value. His appointment arrives with a mandate built on over 35 years of executive experience spanning the public and private sectors, with a background rooted in investment banking, corporate governance, and infrastructure development.

Hurtado Parra’s departure aligns with a retirement plan approved by mutual agreement earlier this July. Ecopetrol, which produces more than 60% of Colombia’s hydrocarbons and maintains extensive international operations across the Americas, continues to navigate complex regulatory and market conditions. The company remains a critical player in the regional energy sector, managing significant assets in power transmission and logistics alongside its core oil and gas exploration activities.
