The expansion follows the successful implementation of autonomous systems at the Bull Run Quarry, which began in November 2024. By integrating this technology into its Boscobel and Bealeton sites, Luck Stone aims to stabilize production consistency across shifts while enhancing workplace safety. The project, supported by local dealer Carter Machinery, also involves equipping loaders and auxiliary site machinery with complementary digital tools to synchronize with the autonomous truck fleets.
Luck Stone Expands Autonomous Hauling Fleet with Caterpillar
After hauling 3.5 million tons of material across 18 months of pilot testing, Luck Stone is scaling its autonomous operations. The company will deploy Caterpillar’s self-driving technology to two additional Virginia quarries, marking the first time the manufacturer has integrated its automated system into the Cat 775 haul truck model.
For Luck Stone, the shift toward automation serves as a strategy to upskill its workforce, transitioning employees into technology-centric roles rather than replacing them. Travis Chewning, vice president of engineering and operations support, stated that the initiative is designed to ignite human potential by removing workers from hazardous environments and providing new development opportunities. Caterpillar, meanwhile, is using these quarry deployments to refine its MineStar Command platform, which has already logged over 13 billion tonnes of autonomous hauling globally. This expansion represents a significant step in scaling industrial-grade autonomy beyond traditional mining into the broader aggregates market.
