Agility Robotics Launches Digit 5 to Work Alongside Humans

Agility Robotics has unveiled Digit 5, a humanoid robot engineered to operate safely in close proximity to human workers without physical barriers. Building on 65,000 hours of real-world deployment, the new model aims to transition humanoid automation from isolated pilot projects to full-scale, versatile facility workflows.

The latest iteration of the Digit platform introduces a sophisticated safety architecture designed to eliminate the protective caging typically required for industrial robotics. By integrating proprietary AI-driven human detection with visual and auditory cues, the robot can autonomously adjust its behavior—pausing, moving, or assuming a seated position—when people enter its immediate workspace. This safety framework is reinforced by a partnership with NVIDIA, utilizing the IGX Thor platform for real-time edge processing.

Beyond safety, the hardware has received significant upgrades to handle more demanding industrial tasks. Digit 5 can lift payloads up to 50 pounds, a 40% increase over its predecessor, and features a rapid charging system that allows for a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio. With swappable grippers and an expanded reach of 7.2 feet, the robot is designed to manage entire facility lifecycles, from initial depalletizing to final shipment preparation. Agility Robotics reports over $300 million in multi-year orders for the system, with plans to expand commercial availability into the European Union and the United Kingdom by 2027.
