Northeastern Illinois University Retention Hits Four-Year High
A 4.8-percentage-point jump has brought Northeastern Illinois University’s first-year retention rate to 65%, the highest mark recorded by the institution since 2020. This shift comes as the university reshapes its academic portfolio to align with regional workforce demands while supporting a student body that frequently balances professional and family obligations.
Demographic shifts are also reshaping the campus. Enrollment among African American students grew by 10%, while Asian and White student populations saw increases of 11% and 5%, respectively. To maintain this momentum, the university is aggressively expanding its degree offerings. Recent additions include a Doctor of Education in Leadership, Equity and Inquiry and a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence. Plans are also underway for a Master of Science in Nursing, which will incorporate mixed-reality simulation technology at the El Centro location to address regional healthcare gaps. Under the guidance of Vice President for Enrollment Management Dr. Kiantra D. Loza, these initiatives are part of a broader push to remove barriers for adult learners and transfer students, who remain a critical pillar of the university's mission.
