The study, conducted by Leiden University Medical Centre, tracked adults with severe, uncontrolled asthma for up to 12 months. Participants placed the Albus Home contactless monitoring system by their bedsides, allowing researchers to gather objective data while patients went about their nightly routines. With a median of 9.5 hours of monitoring per night, the system achieved high adherence rates, effectively overcoming the memory bias and reporting fatigue that often plague traditional clinical trials.
Nighttime cough frequency predicts asthma flare-ups
A five-fold increase in nocturnal coughing significantly spikes the likelihood of severe asthma symptoms the following day, according to research presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress 2026. Passive monitoring technology from Albus Health provided this clinical evidence, capturing continuous respiratory data without requiring manual patient input.

Statistical analysis revealed a strong correlation between nocturnal cough rates and subsequent daily symptom scores. For every five-fold rise in coughing, the odds of a worse symptom score increased by 1.55 times. This predictive window extended up to three days, suggesting that automated monitoring could serve as an early warning system for patients at risk of worsening conditions. Lead author Fleur Meulmeester noted that while nocturnal symptoms remain a burdensome feature of the disease, this objective data collection offers a reliable way to track disease activity over long periods.
