The da Vinci SP system utilizes a single-entry point to navigate narrow or deep anatomical spaces, providing surgeons with three multi-jointed instruments and a 3DHD endoscope. By enabling procedures through natural orifices, the system aims to minimize tissue disruption compared to conventional approaches. Dirk Barten, Intuitive’s commercial president for Europe, noted that this milestone enhances access to less invasive surgical options, potentially improving recovery outcomes for patients.
Intuitive Gains European Approval for Transvaginal Robotic Surgery
Surgeons across Europe now have regulatory clearance to perform transvaginal gynecologic procedures using Intuitive's da Vinci SP system. The CE mark approval, announced September 14, 2026, marks a global first for the single-port platform, broadening the technology's application in women's health beyond traditional abdominopelvic and thoracic surgeries.

This expansion builds on the existing portfolio of the SP system, which already supports transoral and transanal procedures. Tilman Schlick, vice president of medical affairs for Intuitive in Europe, emphasized that these scarless techniques are designed to shorten recovery timelines and improve the overall patient experience. The safety and efficacy of the da Vinci SP platform are supported by more than 1,000 peer-reviewed publications, and the system is currently cleared for clinical use in the United States, Japan, and Korea.
