Los Angeles-based Iwa Robotics has unveiled a trio of autonomous drones designed to transform wildfire response in wildland-urban interface zones. The HAWK, CANARY, and PELICAN platforms function as a coordinated system, handling everything from initial reconnaissance and threat diagnosis to precision suppression, all managed directly by frontline fire crews.

The Discovery and Resolution Fleet aims to mitigate risks for personnel operating in dangerous terrain. HAWK serves as the long-endurance reconnaissance eye, while CANARY acts as a diagnostic tool that tracks fire behavior and evaluates personnel safety. PELICAN completes the cycle by performing active suppression, drenching hot spots and establishing containment lines. CEO Mirza Samnani likens the CANARY platform to a "dalmatian in the sky," providing real-time sensory data and hazard alerts that were previously inaccessible to teams on the ground.

Iwa Robotics developed the fleet alongside active fire captains and drone pilots to ensure the technology addresses genuine field requirements. To facilitate rapid adoption, the company is bypassing traditional procurement hurdles with a fleet-as-a-service model. This arrangement covers maintenance, insurance, and training without requiring upfront capital expenditure from public safety agencies. The firm is currently demonstrating the hardware across eight states to showcase its capabilities in live environments.
