MMRO Secures URAC Artificial Intelligence Healthcare Accreditation

The Novi-based firm spent the past year building a governance framework designed to balance technological integration with strict clinical integrity.

The accreditation process required MMRO to implement rigorous risk assessments and data security protocols that align with URAC’s Version 1.0 standards. Central to this initiative is the establishment of formal clinical oversight, managed by Vice President of Clinical Programs Jen Mongeau. The company maintains that AI will serve as a support mechanism rather than a replacement for professional judgment. According to Douglas Minke, the organization’s General Counsel and Chief Information Security Officer, any new technology must undergo a stringent evaluation process to ensure it protects sensitive information and upholds high clinical standards before implementation.

Under these new guidelines, AI will not issue medical necessity determinations or act as an autonomous decision-maker for clinical outcomes. This certification complements MMRO’s long-standing status as an Independent Review Organization, a designation it has maintained for over 15 years. President and CEO Joe Schimizzi emphasized that the move reflects a broader commitment to operational quality, ensuring that automation does not diminish the role of clinical expertise in their review services.
