The campaign arrives as financial pressures increasingly dictate leisure habits. Recent data highlights that 52% of workers are staying home more frequently due to living costs, while 84% of New Yorkers report rising utility bills. By promoting day trips, cultural heritage sites, and free community events, the organization seeks to provide accessible ways for families to remain engaged without the burden of long-distance travel expenses.
AARP New York pivots to 'staycations' to combat rising living costs
As inflation and caregiving demands squeeze household budgets, AARP New York is launching a statewide campaign to help residents aged 50 and older rediscover local attractions. The initiative aims to replace expensive travel with curated community experiences, ranging from classic film screenings to educational workshops held across the state.

State Director Beth Finkel emphasized that the effort is about more than just cost-saving; it serves as a bridge for social connection and community memory-making. Local leaders, including Councilmembers Sandra Ung and Amanda Farías, have joined the initiative to spotlight neighborhood-specific gems, from the diverse culinary scene in Flushing to the supportive infrastructure of Parkchester. The program also features a 'Movies Turning 50' series, offering free screenings of classics like Taxi Driver and Carrie to registered members, alongside a schedule of virtual classes covering topics from financial planning to brain health.
