Measuring just 3.8mm at its thickest point, the upcoming Lexar Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD pushes hardware miniaturization to an extreme. To achieve this profile, the company abandoned the standard USB-C port, opting instead for a proprietary magnetic connector that challenges the convenience of current industry-standard portable storage devices.

The drive features a tapered design that shrinks to a mere 1mm at the edges, utilizing custom high-density NAND stacking to maintain performance. Despite the radical form factor, the device delivers read speeds of 1,050MB/s and write speeds of 1,000MB/s. These metrics allow the drive to handle 4K Apple ProRes video recording at 120fps when paired with compatible iPhone hardware.

Functionality comes with specific trade-offs. Users must rely on the proprietary SnapLink cable, which attaches via a side-mounted pogo-pin connector rather than a traditional port. This magnetic dependency introduces the risk of accidental disconnection during active data transfers. Furthermore, mounting the drive to a smartphone for mobile recording requires an included magnetic sleeve, effectively negating the ultra-slim design benefits once the hardware is fully configured for field use.
