Representative John Moolenaar, chair of the House Select Committee on China, announced that TikTok abruptly canceled its planned appearance at a public roundtable. The company reportedly backed away from the commitment on August 27, citing concerns that legislators would press for answers regarding its internal child safety practices.
This standoff complicates efforts to maintain oversight following the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. While a deal finalized in January theoretically addressed security concerns by restructuring the app’s US service, members of the committee maintain that significant questions regarding foreign influence and data protection remain unresolved. Moolenaar confirmed he intends to reschedule the session, asserting that the committee will continue pushing for public testimony from TikTok executives before the year concludes.
