Researchers at NYU Langone Health analyzed the GLP1R gene, which influences the body’s levels of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor proteins, to determine how these medications impact hair follicles. While previous reports often attributed thinning hair to rapid weight loss, this study suggests a deeper genetic interaction. Even after adjusting for other variables—such as hypertension and insulin resistance—the 7 percent risk increase remained consistent among the studied male populations.
Genetic link identified between GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and hair loss
Men genetically predisposed to androgenetic alopecia face a 7 percent higher risk of hair loss when taking GLP-1 receptor agonist medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Zepbound. Published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the study marks the first scientific evidence connecting these popular weight-loss drugs to a specific biological hair-loss pathway.

Senior investigator Lynn Petukhova, an assistant professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, noted that these findings could eventually allow physicians to screen patients for potential hair-loss risks before prescribing GLP-1 medications. If future trials confirm these mechanisms, doctors might pair weight-loss treatments with preventative options like minoxidil. Petukhova emphasized that further investigation is required to determine if these findings hold true for women, as the current study focused on male-pattern hair loss.
