The collaboration leverages Realta’s magnetic mirror fusion technology, known as CoSMo fusion, to advance MGE’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero carbon electricity by 2050. Beyond the equity stake, MGE will assist with critical infrastructure requirements, including site selection, permitting, and grid interconnection. This project builds on an established local connection, as Realta recently secured a 250,000-square-foot facility at the former Oscar Mayer site in Madison to house its research operations, dubbed The Realta Forge.
Realta Fusion and MGE Partner to Develop Wisconsin Fusion Plant
Madison Gas and Electric has entered a strategic partnership with Realta Fusion to explore the construction of a 200-megawatt electric fusion power plant. The utility company has committed to a direct equity investment alongside technical and engineering support, marking a significant step toward integrating commercial fusion into the Wisconsin energy grid.
Realta CEO Kieran Furlong noted that the partnership signals a transition for fusion energy from theoretical potential to practical application. For MGE, the project aligns with a broader strategy of investing in emerging technologies to provide reliable, carbon-free power to its 170,000 electric customers. Realta, which is currently backed by Khosla Ventures and Future Ventures, remains one of the few organizations selected for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program.
