Chess.com pivots beyond the board with launch of poker site Gambit

Chief growth officer Albert Cheng stated that the decision to prioritize poker stems from its structural similarities to chess, emphasizing learning and social interaction over financial risk. Gambit explicitly prohibits real-money gambling, positioning itself instead as an educational environment. The site mirrors the Chess.com interface, incorporating familiar features such as bot matches, tournament play, and a comprehensive review mode for post-game analysis.

To maintain competitive integrity, the developers implemented an Elo-style rating system. This metric serves as the primary incentive for user retention and improvement, effectively replacing monetary stakes. The company intends to leverage this system to drive its subscription model, offering premium learning tools and unlimited game reviews to dedicated players. Development for future titles is already accelerating, with Cheng noting that AI tools significantly reduced the time required to translate Chess.com’s existing design patterns into new platforms.

While AI assisted with coding and rapid prototyping, Cheng clarified that the current live version of Gambit relies on human-designed assets. The company is now pivoting toward community-driven growth, starting with the Gambit Cup on August 31st. This livestreamed event, featuring co-founder Danny Rensch and creator Alexandra Botez, marks the beginning of a push to integrate content creators into the platform’s ecosystem as the company eyes further expansion into classic tabletop titles.
