Flexsys Narrows 6PPD Tire Additive Search to Two Final Molecules

After evaluating a field of chemical candidates, Akron-based material science firm Flexsys has narrowed its search for a 6PPD replacement to two final molecules. The company is now entering a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey to conduct independent, large-scale aquatic toxicity testing.

The two selected candidates stand apart from the traditional PPD chemical family. Crucially, they do not form a quinone transformation product during use, a factor linked to the toxicity of current tire additives. Having met internal performance and environmental benchmarks, the molecules are now undergoing rigorous verification to ensure they meet the demands of global tire manufacturers.

Under the new partnership, the USGS Western Fisheries Research Center will evaluate the potential impact of these chemicals on Pacific salmon and other aquatic species. This collaboration utilizes novel testing methodologies that exceed standard regulatory requirements for new chemical registration. These methods include cell-line research, creating a new framework for environmental safety that could eventually extend to other industrial compounds.

Flexsys is simultaneously optimizing the manufacturing processes for both finalists. Because the candidates utilize intermediate chemistry similar to existing 6PPD production, the company aims to leverage current manufacturing assets to expedite commercial scale-up. CEO Carl Brech noted that the shift now moves from discovery to validation and regulatory approval, addressing the industry's dual requirement for a functional, high-performance additive and verified environmental safety.
