ProFound Therapeutics plans to utilize its ProFoundry platform to analyze proteins expressed in the placenta and serum of affected patients. By mapping this expanded human proteome, the Cambridge-based company intends to pinpoint causal biological drivers that have historically remained hidden. The initiative focuses on creating a specialized AI tool capable of identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets that are currently underserved by global research efforts.
Gates Foundation Backs ProFound Therapeutics to Combat Preeclampsia
The Gates Foundation has committed up to $35 million to ProFound Therapeutics, targeting the development of new diagnostics and medicines for preeclampsia and eclampsia. The funding, which begins with an initial $20 million, aims to leverage proprietary proteome mapping and agentic AI to address significant gaps in maternal healthcare.

John Lepore, CEO of ProFound Therapeutics, emphasized that the company will translate these scientific insights into clinical solutions for conditions that lack adequate treatment options. Herbert "Skip" Virgin of the Gates Foundation noted that the project addresses a critical disparity in medical research, where only a marginal percentage of global R&D is currently dedicated to female-specific health conditions outside of oncology. The collaboration seeks to accelerate the timeline for bringing these essential therapies to patients worldwide.
