Cizzle Bio Targets Early Lung Cancer Detection with CIZ1B Blood Test

With roughly 1.6 million lung nodules identified annually in the United States, clinicians face a persistent struggle to distinguish benign growths from malignant tumors. At the Next Generation Dx Summit, Dr. Lary Robinson of Moffitt Cancer Center presented new data on the CIZ1B biomarker as a potential diagnostic bridge.

The current standard for detection, low-dose CT screening, suffers from low participation rates and ambiguity regarding indeterminate nodules. Dr. Robinson, who directs the Lung Cancer Early Detection (LEAD) center at Moffitt, emphasized that a reliable blood-based test could curb the reliance on unnecessary invasive procedures. His ongoing clinical study evaluates how CIZ1B—a biomarker rooted in three decades of research at the University of York—can help stratify recurrence risk and monitor patients post-treatment.

Recent data published in The Journal of Applied Laboratory Medicine bolster the case for the assay, reporting a sensitivity of 94% and a negative predictive value of 97%. Cizzle Bio has already begun a phased commercial rollout of the test, initially targeting healthcare providers across the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio markets. As the Moffitt study continues to gather longitudinal data, the company aims to solidify the role of CIZ1B within the broader lung cancer care pathway.
