Michigan launches autonomous drone delivery for automotive parts

A $740,000 state grant is fueling a new commercial drone delivery network in metro Detroit, aimed at bypassing urban traffic congestion. The initiative, led by Jack Demmer Automotive Group, utilizes specialized UAV technology to transport high-demand parts to dealerships within a 12-mile radius of the Ann Arbor–Detroit corridor.

The project represents a strategic pivot for the automotive supply chain, moving beyond traditional ground logistics to address persistent delays caused by workforce shortages and road traffic. By utilizing blueflite’s tiltrotor drone platform, the dealership group expects to streamline vehicle repairs and improve customer service timelines. The operation is supported by the Michigan Advanced Air Mobility Activation Fund, a collaborative state effort involving the Department of Transportation and the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification.

Digital oversight for the program is provided by Airspace Link, whose AirHub system manages flight coordination and safety compliance. Beyond immediate logistics gains, the deployment serves as a real-world testing ground for advanced air mobility in urban environments. State officials intend to use the data gathered from these live flights to help inform future regulatory policies and solidify Michigan’s role as a national hub for drone-based commercial operations.
