Wilmington Airport Adopts Sunflower Program for Invisible Disabilities
Starting September 1, Wilmington Airport will join the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network to assist travelers with non-apparent conditions. By adopting this universal symbol, the facility aims to provide a more inclusive environment for passengers with autism, anxiety, or chronic pain, ensuring they receive tailored support throughout their journey.
Benjamin Clendaniel, Director of Airports for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, emphasized that the program provides a necessary visual cue for conditions that often go unrecognized. To prepare for the rollout, ILG personnel have completed specialized training designed to foster a supportive, non-judgmental response. Rather than making assumptions, staff are now equipped to ask how they can best assist individual travelers. The airport joins a network of over 350 airports worldwide that have implemented the program since its inception in 2016. Complimentary lanyards will be available at the Airport Operations counter for those seeking a more seamless and accessible transit experience.
