Cody Wilson’s new tool bypasses 3D-printed gun detection software

A digital cat-and-mouse game has erupted as Cody Wilson, creator of the first 3D-printed firearm, unveiled a method to circumvent government-mandated detection software. The tool, dubbed “Hochulization,” directly challenges New York’s recent mandate requiring 3D printer manufacturers to install systems capable of blocking the production of illicit gun components.

Wilson’s move serves as a pointed rebuttal to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, whose legislation aims to police open-source 3D printing by embedding detection software into hardware. Operating out of Austin, Texas, Wilson views his software as a necessary self-defense measure against state-level efforts to restrict the dissemination of digital blueprints. His company, Defense Distributed, currently maintains DEFCAD, a repository hosting over 200,000 files related to firearms and suppressors.

The conflict centers on the mechanics of hash-based identification. Typically, detection systems scan files for specific strings of numbers—hashes—assigned to known gun designs to flag them for blocking. Wilson’s counter-tool automatically modifies these hashes, rendering static detection algorithms ineffective. By constantly altering the digital signatures of his files, Wilson ensures that printers relying on traditional blacklists cannot identify or intercept the prohibited designs, effectively neutralizing the regulatory hurdle.
