Walmart Bows to Demand for Tap-to-Pay

After years of resisting industry-standard mobile payments, Walmart is finally integrating Apple Pay and Google Pay into its checkout lanes. The retail giant announced that tap-to-pay capabilities will arrive at select locations on August 24, with a full rollout across all U.S. stores slated for completion by late 2026.

The shift marks a significant departure from Walmart’s long-standing strategy of prioritizing its proprietary Walmart Pay service, which relies on QR codes. For years, the company actively shunned NFC-based systems, even participating in the failed CurrentC mobile payment project before launching its own alternative in 2016. As recently as last year, company representatives insisted that their existing solutions provided sufficient convenience for shoppers.

This change in direction signals a broader acknowledgment that consumer habits have shifted away from closed-loop systems. By the middle of 2027, the company expects to have tap-to-pay functionality available at its gas stations as well. While the retailer maintains that these new options complement their current payment methods, the move effectively ends one of the final major holdouts against the ubiquity of Apple and Google’s digital wallets.
