Once fully operational, the Protos Energy Recovery Facility will generate 49.9MW of baseload electricity, providing power for approximately 90,000 homes. Beyond energy production, the site serves the circular economy by processing residual waste into secondary construction aggregates and recovering ferrous and non-ferrous metals for industrial reuse.
METLEN reaches waste-to-energy milestone at Cheshire Protos plant
A 500,000-tonne capacity facility in Cheshire has hit its first fire on waste, marking a critical transition into final hot commissioning. Developed by METLEN for Encyclis, the plant now stands as a functional test of the company’s ability to navigate complex thermal energy infrastructure projects despite previous industry-wide supply chain pressures.

METLEN executed the design and construction in partnership with Standardkessel Baumgarte GmbH. This achievement follows a period of rigorous project management, where the company sought to overcome significant cost inflation and technical hurdles. The project serves as a practical demonstration of the M RESET platform, which recently consolidated METLEN's renewables and power divisions to streamline the delivery of large-scale thermal infrastructure. With over 90 projects completed in the UK, the company is now positioning this facility as a benchmark for future thermal developments.
