The company initially directed out-of-warranty customers to purchase replacement mainboards, forcing some to resort to external BIOS programming tools to revive their systems. Following inquiries into the failure rate and potential fixes, founder Nirav Patel confirmed the firm is now offering case-by-case exceptions for out-of-warranty replacements when the update is identified as the clear cause of the failure.
Framework addresses bricked BIOS updates on Ryzen 7040 laptops
Owners of the Framework Laptop 13 equipped with Ryzen 7040-series processors are reporting that BIOS version 3.20 is rendering their machines unresponsive. The update, which remains available for download on the company’s website, traps devices on the installation screen, leaving a subset of users with non-bootable hardware.

To prevent recurrence, Framework is rolling out a new "Crisis Recovery Mode" designed to allow direct recovery from failed firmware installations. While this feature is currently limited to the company's desktop hardware, development teams are integrating the recovery protocol into upcoming BIOS cycles for the Laptop 12, 13, and 16 models. Framework has yet to disclose a specific timeline for these releases or the exact percentage of affected units.
