Open-source alternative to DJI’s bloated camera app

Software developer Konrad Iturbe has launched Osmosis, a reverse-engineered, open-source application designed to replace DJI’s restrictive proprietary software. By bypassing the company’s cloud-reliant ecosystem, the tool grants users direct control over their footage, enabling wireless file management, trimming, and real-time previews for a range of Osmo pocket cameras.

The project emerged from the frustration of managing DJI hardware through apps that constantly transmit data to external servers. Iturbe’s solution mimics the communication protocol used by official DJI software, allowing users to browse their SD card contents, filter media by type or status, and queue specific files for download. During testing, the app successfully streamed low-resolution previews from an Osmo Pocket 3, even while the hardware was actively recording.

While the current interface remains unpolished, the functionality extends beyond basic file transfers. Users can trim clips directly within the app and view real-time battery and storage statistics. Compatibility has been confirmed for the Osmo Pocket 3 and a variety of Action series models, including the Action 5 Pro and Action 6. By stripping away the bloat of the official ecosystem, Osmosis provides a streamlined workflow for creators who prioritize local control over cloud-dependent connectivity.
