The research, which surveyed 903 participants across the U.S. and Canada, highlights a pervasive culture of apathy among younger generations. Nearly 65% of respondents described their reaction to modern brand messaging as either disengaged or indifferent. While marketers often lean on influencer campaigns to bridge this gap, the data suggests these efforts are falling flat; influencer recommendations ranked last among all loyalty drivers surveyed.
Why Gen Z Is Tuning Out Your Brand
Only 11% of Gen Z consumers believe brands truly understand them, a critical disconnect that leaves most marketing efforts facing a wall of indifference. A new study from Rival Technologies reveals that when young shoppers feel understood, they are nine times more likely to remain unconditionally loyal to a brand.

Instead, practical factors remain the primary gatekeepers of brand devotion. Price, value, and product quality were cited by over 80% of participants as the core influences on their loyalty, dwarfing the impact of value-alignment or social signaling. Apple, Nike, and Costco emerged as the clear leaders in consumer retention, consistently outperforming rivals like Adidas and Samsung. Paula Catoira, CMO at Rival Group, suggests the solution lies in moving away from assumptions and toward direct, conversational engagement that allows Gen Z to define their own priorities in real-time.
