This oversharing feeds a thriving dark web economy where a stolen payment card fetches a mere $10. Criminals value an email account at $27, often using it as a gateway to compromise entire digital identities, while high-value targets like Cash App accounts command up to $555.

NordVPN expert Adrianus Warmenhoven Briedis notes that the disparity between what users fear losing and what hackers actually target is profound. While individuals worry about high-level identity theft, attackers frequently capitalize on mundane, everyday accounts. Beyond the 33% willing to abstain from alcohol to scrub their history, 26% would abandon video games and 19% would forgo sweets. Experts suggest that basic digital hygiene—such as multi-factor authentication and limiting public data exposure—remains the most effective deterrent against being the easiest catch for cybercriminals.
