NKR and NLR Streamline Serology Testing Ahead of New OPTN Policy

Transplant centers face a new seven-day window for HIV and West Nile Virus testing following the August 17 implementation of a mandatory OPTN emergency policy. To prevent surgical delays, the National Kidney Registry and National Liver Registry deployed a comprehensive testing solution a full week before the deadline.

The new OPTN mandate requires all serology testing to be completed within one week of an operation, creating significant logistical pressure for medical facilities. To bridge this gap, the NKR and NLR expanded their existing digital infrastructure to offer enhanced tracking and 24-hour monitoring for both member and non-member centers. CEO Garet Hil stated that the priority was to ensure surgeries remain on schedule despite the tighter regulatory timeline.

Beyond simply meeting the seven-day threshold, the registry’s platform manages 17 distinct serology tests and the final crossmatch process. The service includes remote phlebotomy options, emergency courier logistics, and a centralized portal for scheduling. By delivering results within two days of a blood draw, the system provides a buffer for centers struggling to navigate the updated testing requirements without jeopardizing patient care.
