Twelve panels are scheduled for installation at the group home this month, while the remaining 45 await a larger rollout at the SEARCH Thrift Store in Mount Jackson, Virginia. To complete that project, the organization is currently seeking $29,000 in additional funding to cover installation costs.
Solar Donation Powers Residential Care in Shenandoah County
Fifty-seven surplus solar panels donated by Got Electric are poised to transform the finances of Shenandoah County SEARCH, a nonprofit providing residential support for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The equipment will slash electricity costs at both the organization’s group home and its community thrift store.
Energy projections suggest the group home will offset 75% of its electricity usage, generating roughly 5,644 kilowatt-hours annually. Once the thrift store system is operational, it is expected to produce 24,702 kilowatt-hours, covering over 65% of its power needs. For a nonprofit that spent $11,500 on utilities in the 2026 fiscal year, these savings represent a significant shift toward mission-critical spending. Board member Kim Cassford described the initiative as a "mission project" expected to yield six-figure savings over the next two decades, directly supporting resident care, staffing, and facility improvements.
