Cate Tolnai, the university’s Director of Microcredentials and Innovation Credential Strategy, led sessions focusing on the practical challenges of credential design. A core theme of her presentations was the need to move beyond simple participation tokens. Instead, she argued that institutions must embed employer feedback and rigorous competency assessments into every badge to ensure they communicate exactly what a learner is prepared to do next.
One significant focus of the summit was the translation of military experience into civilian workforce value. Partnering with Jobs for the Future, Tolnai highlighted how skills-based credentialing helps veterans articulate their unique capabilities in language that traditional employers recognize. By moving away from purely academic pathways, the university aims to make military learning more portable and visible.
