Despite a 31% decline in regional overdose deaths throughout 2024, the crisis remains a persistent public health hurdle for Illinois. Data indicates that nearly 80% of residents struggling with substance use disorders still lack access to necessary care, a disparity often fueled by social stigma. Research from the 2024 Illinois Addiction Stigma Index shows that while a majority of residents are open to neighbors with addiction, only 33% would be comfortable with a relative marrying someone in recovery.
The upcoming walk aims to bridge these divides by connecting families, healthcare advocates, and those in recovery. Pam Jenkins, CEO of Shatterproof, emphasized that while recent progress is measurable, the focus remains on ensuring evidence-based support reaches those who need it most. Proceeds from the gathering will directly fund policy advocacy, improved treatment infrastructure, and family resources.
