The upcoming calendar marks a strategic departure from the tight city confines that defined the series since 2014. By integrating venues like Zandvoort and Austin, the FIA is creating space for the Gen4 platform, which reaches speeds of up to 208mph. These vehicles are physically larger and carry a 600kW attack mode—a 71 percent power increase over the outgoing generation—necessitating circuits that support sustained high-speed performance.
Formula E pivots to high-speed tracks and F1-style sprint formats
With the debut of Gen4 electric cars this December, Formula E is shedding its street-circuit roots for iconic permanent tracks like the Circuit of the Americas and Brands Hatch. The shift brings a new, aggressive race weekend format, signaling a direct attempt to challenge the speed and scale of Formula 1.
To complement the technical upgrades, organizers are introducing a 30-minute “Unleashed” sprint race held before the main E-Prix. By removing mandatory pit-stop energy management, this format allows drivers to prioritize raw pace. Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds noted that these performance gains place the series directly on the heels of F1, with expectations that the subsequent Gen5 iteration will further narrow the gap.
