South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, described the current window as a decisive decade for the country’s market transformation. The government’s ambitious roadmap includes adding 105 GW of generation capacity and constructing 14,500 kilometers of transmission lines. This expansion relies on a diversified energy mix, incorporating solar, wind, battery storage, natural gas, and nuclear power to stabilize a grid that has long struggled with capacity constraints.
South Africa Targets R2.2 Trillion Energy Expansion with China
More than 260 government and industry representatives gathered at POWERCHINA headquarters in Beijing this month to unlock R2.2 trillion in energy investments. Under South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan 2025, the initiative aims to overhaul the nation’s power grid through 2039, focusing on generation, transmission, and large-scale infrastructure development.
POWERCHINA, which has operated in South Africa since 2008, currently manages 1.9 GW of renewable projects and 1.9 GWh of battery storage. President Wang Xiaojun emphasized that the company’s role extends beyond construction, citing active efforts in local procurement and technical education, such as the welding training center established for the 100 MW Redstone solar facility. As the conference lays the groundwork for a formal energy investment partnership, the focus remains on integrating these large-scale projects with water infrastructure, including the Mokolo-Crocodile Water Augmentation Project, to support both industrial hubs and local municipalities.
