Roku turns to AI-generated sludge for its new streaming channel

Roku has officially entered the AI content race by launching a 24/7 stream dedicated to videos produced by Fairground, a startup fronted by Colin Petrie-Norris. While the platform expands its FAST channel library, this latest addition trades traditional entertainment for a relentless feed of algorithmically generated short-form clips.

Roku turns to AI-generated sludge for its new streaming channel

The appeal of free ad-supported streaming television has historically relied on the rediscovery of classic films and series. Roku’s newest venture, Fairground AI Creator TV, abandons that premise entirely. The channel offers a passive viewing experience where users have no control over the content served, mirroring the structure of traditional broadcast feeds but lacking the substance of human-produced media.

Fairground, which launched in 2025, is currently developing AI-driven adaptations of literary staples like Robin Hood and Dracula. Despite these ambitions, the actual output currently streaming on Roku feels indistinguishable from the generic, low-quality video slop often associated with current text-to-video models. There is no cohesive theme or genre to the programming, leaving viewers to sift through a disjointed stream of content created by a rotating roster of partners. By integrating this feed, Roku appears more interested in signaling its participation in the generative AI trend than in providing a compelling alternative to its established library of comedy and sitcom classics.
