The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning parents against a rising tide of counterfeit squishy toys that pose severe health risks, including chemical exposure and choking hazards. Beyond manufacturing defects, the agency is sounding the alarm on a dangerous social media trend involving children microwaving these products.
The agency specifically cautions against the viral practice of heating these toys. Squishy materials can reach extreme temperatures and burst, releasing sticky, hot substances that adhere to skin and worsen thermal injuries. Consumers are urged to inspect toys for chemical odors, oily surfaces, or signs of deterioration. If a burn occurs, the CPSC advises flushing the area with cool running water for 20 minutes and seeking medical attention, rather than using ice or home remedies.
