Electronic Arts Completes $55 Billion Privatization Deal

A consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has finalized a $55 billion buyout of Electronic Arts, marking the largest leveraged acquisition in gaming history. The deal shifts the publisher into private hands, with the PIF securing a 93.4 percent stake in the restructured organization.

The massive transaction involved $20 billion in debt financing, a structure that necessitates aggressive returns and potentially signals a shift in the publisher's creative direction. Under this new ownership, EA is expected to prioritize its core tentpole franchises, such as EA Sports FC, Madden NFL, and Battlefield. This approach mirrors a broader industry trend where major players like Xbox and Ubisoft increasingly favor proven, bankable releases over smaller, experimental projects.

CEO Andrew Wilson addressed the transition in an internal memo, framing the buyout as the start of a new chapter for the company. Despite the debt burden associated with the buyout, Wilson emphasized a focus on ambition and creativity. The move cements EA’s place in a landscape of record-breaking gaming acquisitions, trailing the scale of Microsoft’s $68.7 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard while overshadowing other recent industry consolidation efforts.
