Demis Hassabis is stepping into a dual role as chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet, marking a significant pivot in the company's AI hierarchy. CEO Sundar Pichai announced the transition Wednesday, as veteran researcher Jeff Dean departs the tech giant to launch a new venture, Discovery Loop.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind’s CTO, assumes the role of SVP of DeepMind and will report directly to the CEO. Kavukcuoglu retains his responsibilities as Google’s chief AI architect. Meanwhile, the departure of Jeff Dean, Google’s 30th employee, signals a structural shift. Dean and fellow Google veteran Sanjay Ghemawat are establishing Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on machine learning and scientific engineering. Google has committed to backing the new entity as a founding investor.
