KuCoin at Nine: A Pivot From Trading Hub to Financial Infrastructure

As the digital asset sector matures, the focus for major exchanges has shifted from simple token access to building resilient, regulated infrastructure. A new CoinGecko Research report tracks KuCoin’s nine-year evolution, highlighting how the platform is expanding beyond trading into payments and tokenized traditional assets to serve 45 million users.

The first half of 2026 marked a period of significant utility growth for the exchange. Off-chain payment volume surged by 300%, while payment orders increased 25-fold. This expansion into real-world use cases was bolstered by a 60% growth in service partners and merchants, signaling a move toward practical financial utility rather than speculative trading alone.

Market data from the report reveals a shift in user behavior. While KuCoin maintained average daily volumes of $1.99 billion in spot and $3.07 billion in perpetual futures, the dominance of major assets like BTC and ETH in top trading pairs dropped from 74.3% to 45.2%. Traders are rotating faster into altcoins and emerging narratives, forcing the platform to prioritize agility and liquidity breadth. Furthermore, tokenized stocks and equity indices accounted for 61% of new perpetual contracts launched between January and July, reflecting a growing bridge between traditional market themes and crypto-native infrastructure.
