University of Florida Opens Advanced Robotics Lab to Solve Housing Crisis

Florida faces a dual crisis: a shortage of 121,000 homes and a shrinking construction workforce with 41% of laborers approaching retirement by 2031. To bridge this gap, the University of Florida has opened the nation’s most advanced robotics lab dedicated to industrialized construction, aiming to automate and accelerate the building process.

The Autodesk Design and Make Laboratory, backed by a $1 million donation from Autodesk, serves as the new hub for Dr. Aladdin Alwisy’s Smart Industrialized Design and Construction Lab. The facility bridges the university's College of Design, Construction and Planning and the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, providing students with hands-on training in modular assembly, digital twins, and collaborative robotics. Unlike traditional research sites, this space focuses on shifting construction into factory settings, where robots handle repetitive framing tasks while humans oversee quality and complex decision-making.

This initiative supports the university's new Industrialized Construction Engineering degree program, which welcomes its first cohort this fall. By integrating AI-powered workflows and advanced BIM technologies, the lab aims to transition from experimental research to real-world deployment. According to Autodesk COO Steve Blum, the goal is to prepare a new generation of workers for hybrid roles that pair traditional building expertise with digital fluency. As testing continues, researchers expect the lab’s technology to drastically reduce construction timelines, potentially allowing housing projects that currently take months to be framed in a single weekend.
