The event centers on the "43 Key Seconds" initiative, a protocol created by the family of late Auburn football standout Philip Lutzenkirchen. Executive Director Mike Lutzenkirchen will open the summit by recounting his son’s death in a 2014 vehicle crash, a tragedy that prompted the foundation to emphasize four critical pre-drive habits: maintaining a clear head, keeping hands free of devices, focusing eyes solely on the road, and buckling seatbelts.
Lutzie 43 Foundation Brings Safe Driving Summit to Signal Mountain
On August 11, Signal Mountain Middle/High School will host the Lutzie 43 Foundation’s first Tennessee-based Safe Driving Summit. The day-long program aims to reduce roadway fatalities by teaching students the life-saving consequences of distracted and impaired driving through personal testimony and hands-on training from first responders and industry professionals.
Following the keynote, students will rotate through four breakout sessions designed to simulate the reality of a crash. Local partners, including Erlanger and Siskin Hospital, will demonstrate medical trauma responses, while representatives from the Tennessee Trucking Association, McKee Foods, and FedEx will allow students to sit inside commercial rigs to identify blind spots and stopping distance challenges. Additional expertise will be provided by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and Signal Mountain Police Department to round out the instruction. The summit runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school’s Sam Powell Trail campus.
