The American Trailer Manufacturers Coalition—a group including Great Dane LLC, Stoughton Trailers LLC, and Wabash Corporation—hailed the decision as a vital step toward restoring market balance. Beyond the new antidumping levies, the Commerce Department confirmed that duties previously applied to Chinese-origin trailers will now extend to similar merchandise routed through Canada to circumvent existing trade barriers. These measures supplement earlier countervailing duties intended to offset subsidies provided to Mexican producers.
U.S. Imposes Preliminary Duties on Mexican and Canadian Trailers
The U.S. Department of Commerce has issued preliminary antidumping duties on van-type trailers imported from Mexico, with rates climbing as high as 79.92%. This move follows findings that these imports were sold below fair market value, marking a significant escalation in the government's effort to shield domestic manufacturers from foreign trade practices.
Robert E. DeFrancesco, trade counsel to the coalition, stated that the group will continue to press for full relief throughout the final phase of the investigation. The domestic industry, which directly employs nearly 10,000 workers and supports roughly 50,000 additional jobs, has argued that unfair global competition has caused material injury to American producers. Final determinations regarding the duty structures are expected to arrive later this year.
