Punta Cana Shifts From Tourism Hub to Industrial Powerhouse

Punta Cana has long been synonymous with Caribbean tourism, but a structural economic pivot is rewriting that identity. The Punta Cana Free Trade Zone (PCFTZ), a 742,160-square-meter complex developed by Grupo Puntacana, is now a fully operational logistics and manufacturing hub challenging traditional trade routes across the Americas.

The zone’s competitive edge stems from its direct integration with the Punta Cana Airport. By housing the region’s first dedicated Air Cargo Hub—operated by DP World Dominicana—the facility eliminates standard administrative bottlenecks. The terminal has already processed over 33,000 tons of cargo, supported by 4,000 square meters of specialized cold storage for pharmaceuticals and perishables. Major carriers including Air Canada Cargo and UniWorld Air Cargo now utilize the hub to link South America, Europe, and North America.

Beyond logistics, the site is attracting high-value manufacturing and aviation services. Southside Packaging International has established a 45,000-square-foot facility, benefiting from the Dominican Republic’s 100% exemption on customs duties and corporate taxes. Simultaneously, FL Technics has anchored the site’s aeronautical capabilities with an expansive maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center. Currently featuring 10 aircraft positions with plans to expand to 19, the MRO base is drawing aerospace component manufacturers to the island. To support these technical operations, a new fuel center with an 800,000-gallon capacity ensures rapid turnaround times for long-haul carriers.

This industrial expansion represents a significant departure from the region’s historical reliance on leisure travel. With projections to generate over 9,000 direct and indirect jobs, the PCFTZ is fostering a specialized workforce of aeronautical mechanics and supply-chain experts. By combining tax incentives with robust infrastructure, the zone has solidified its role as a permanent fixture in the nation’s macroeconomic landscape.
