The survey of 2,000 parents, conducted alongside data from The Insights Family, highlights a shift in how families approach digital habits. While passive media like television and movies still occupy 37% of screen time, parents report that interactive experiences are significantly more enriching. Roughly 83% of respondents stated their children have acquired new knowledge through these platforms, challenging the stigma often associated with digital devices.
Parents Favor Interactive Screen Time Over Passive Media for Young Children
Seventy-three percent of U.S. parents now view interactive screen time as superior to passive consumption for children aged two to eight. According to the 2026 Kids Interactive Entertainment Report, digital engagement—such as gaming and content creation—now accounts for two-thirds of the total screen time for this demographic.

Games have emerged as a primary gateway for character discovery, often outpacing traditional media like books or toys. Data from Lingokids indicates that 59% of children seek out shows or movies after first encountering a character within an interactive environment. Mikael Journo, COO and CMO of Lingokids, suggests that the distinction between educational and entertainment apps is rapidly vanishing. He predicts that future market leaders will be defined by high engagement rates, where content is compelling enough to drive an 80% completion rate for activities without external pressure.
