DoorDash Takes Flight with In-House Drone Program

DoorDash has secured Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 certification, clearing the path to deploy its own fleet of custom-built drones for food delivery. By moving beyond existing partnerships with companies like Wing, the delivery giant aims to integrate proprietary aerial technology directly into its local commerce infrastructure.

The company intends to manufacture its new aircraft through DoorDash Labs, the same division currently responsible for the firm's sidewalk delivery robots. While the business previously tested drone logistics in regions including Dallas-Fort Worth and Virginia using third-party systems, this shift signals a move toward total vertical integration. Executives claim the drones are designed specifically to bridge gaps in local delivery, emphasizing that the majority of components are sourced domestically.

Beyond the aircraft themselves, the company is preparing to engineer the ground-level infrastructure required for seamless hand-offs between restaurants and drones. Similar to existing industry pilots, this requires a complex network of pickup stations and support equipment. DoorDash joins a competitive field of drone operators that includes Alphabet’s Wing, Zipline, and Amazon, all of whom have previously cleared the FAA’s rigorous regulatory hurdles for commercial air carrier certification.
