Gen Z Interns Prioritize Daily Micro-Breaks Over Extra Time Off

For America’s newest workers, the secret to a productive workday isn't a long weekend, but a snack break. A new survey from Slice Soda reveals that 79% of interns find short, intentional pauses throughout the day more vital for their performance and morale than traditional corporate perks like additional leave.

Gen Z Interns Prioritize Daily Micro-Breaks Over Extra Time Off

The research, which polled 501 young professionals, suggests a fundamental shift in how the next generation approaches labor. Rather than viewing the workday as a continuous slog, these employees are integrating what they call "micro joys"—small, restorative rituals like stepping away from a desk for fresh air or grabbing a beverage—to sustain their creative output. According to the data, 82% of respondents report that their best ideas occur away from their computer screens.

When asked to rank the workplace benefits that most improve their daily experience, healthy food and drink stations tied with outdoor time for the top spot, each favored by 43% of participants. In contrast, only 24% of interns identified an extra day off as their primary preference. Nicole Portwood, Chief Marketing Officer at Suja Life, the parent company of Slice Soda, noted that this generation is not rejecting hard work, but rather "redefining what makes work feel better." By valuing these small victories and resets, young workers are signaling a move toward a more sustainable, if fragmented, model of professional endurance.
