Access to specialized infrastructure remains a persistent bottleneck in aerospace development. While ground-based wind tunnels are essential, their testing windows are often measured in mere seconds and require lengthy scheduling. Starfighters Space, which operates the world's only commercial fleet of flight-ready Mach 2+ F-104 aircraft, intends to bypass these limitations by conducting tests in real atmospheric conditions.
Starfighters Space Develops Mach 2+ Airborne Testing Platform
Starfighters Space is advancing its Wind Tunnel in the Sky program, a modular airborne platform designed to provide sustained supersonic testing. By utilizing its fleet of F-104 jets, the company aims to offer researchers and defense contractors a high-speed alternative to the limited run times of traditional ground-based wind tunnels.

The proposed underwing platform is designed to be reusable and modular, capable of hosting sensors, avionics, and various test articles during flight. A typical 45-minute mission with these jets can provide up to 10 minutes of Mach 2+ exposure. According to CEO Tim Franta, this allows hardware to experience vibration, acceleration, and thermal profiles that are difficult to replicate in a fixed facility. The initiative builds on previous flight-test experience, including work conducted for the company's STARLAUNCH 1 demonstrator, as demand for hypersonic and advanced defense systems continues to rise across the broader aerospace sector.
