While traditional diagnostics prioritize hemoglobin levels to identify anemia, studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicate that low iron stores can severely impact energy levels long before anemia manifests. For many patients, fatigue persists despite normal blood counts, a gap in clinical practice that leaves many women without answers or effective treatment.
Kirk Wilson, co-founder of the Scottsdale-based Prana IV Therapy, notes that the absence of anemia often complicates the path to care, as insurance coverage frequently requires more severe clinical markers. "Many women may experience ongoing fatigue without realizing low iron stores could be contributing," Wilson stated. Research published in the BMJ supports this, demonstrating that non-anemic women with low ferritin levels saw significant improvements in energy after targeted iron supplementation compared to those who received a placebo.
