SIGGRAPH 2026 Convenes in Los Angeles to Chart the Future of Graphics

More than 9,500 artists, researchers, and developers gathered in Los Angeles this week for the 53rd annual SIGGRAPH conference. The event served as a global nexus for exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence, robotics, and immersive storytelling, marking 53 years of progress in interactive computer graphics and digital production.

The conference program emphasized the blurring boundaries between physics, AI, and traditional creative workflows. A standout moment arrived Monday when Disney Research Fellow Lanny Smoot, a veteran inventor with 107 patents, opened the event by tracing a career that spans from early Bell Labs breakthroughs to the development of modern theme park innovations like the HoloTile floor. His keynote set a collaborative tone, highlighting that technical invention remains a team-driven pursuit.

AI dominated the technical discourse, framed consistently as a creative partner rather than a replacement for human artists. NVIDIA led significant portions of the conversation with deep dives into DLSS 5 neural rendering and physical AI, while the debut of the Games Summit introduced dedicated programming for real-time developers. The event also expanded its Computer Animation Festival, which now includes films exceeding 10 minutes, allowing for a broader range of narrative formats to compete for the Best in Show prize. As the week concluded, organizers confirmed that the community will reconvene in Anaheim next August for the 54th iteration of the conference, led by incoming chair Kristy Pron.
