Google adds facial video verification for account recovery

The setup process mimics common biometric security protocols. Users look into their device camera and follow onscreen prompts, performing a series of head movements to capture multiple angles. Unlike Apple’s Face ID, this system functions without infrared hardware, relying instead on standard camera input. Once recorded, the reference video is encrypted and stored in the cloud, allowing it to serve as a backup regardless of the specific device used for the initial setup.

To prevent unauthorized access, the login process requires a new video capture to prove the request is coming from a live person. Google claims the system includes multiple layers of security to block impersonation attempts, including static photos or deepfake videos. While the feature is designed primarily for account recovery, users maintain control over their data and can delete the reference file at any time. The company is currently managing a phased global rollout, with users able to check their account eligibility at g.co/signin-selfie.
